You need to log in to the university website and then register and apply online. It is better if you can make payment for the entrance test fee of USD 10 or INR 670 through internet banking or debit or credit card. Those who cannot make payment online are still required to apply online and then make payment through a bank draft. They should write their name, application number and the programme they have applied for on the back of the bank draft (which should be drawn in favour of “South Asian University”, payable at New Delhi) and courier it to the Deputy Registrar Admissions, South Asian University, Akbar Bhawan, Chanakyapuri, New Delhi, 110021, India. If you don’t belong to any of the SAARC countries you do not need to take the entrance Test. The application should reach South Asian University by 25 March 2017. Each application will be scrutinized by the concerned faculty to determine the eligibility of the candidate and the decision of the university will be final in this regard.

The current teacher student ratio at SAU is approximately 1:6.

Q12. Do you have any undergraduate programme?

The university doesn’t have any undergraduate programme as yet.

Q13. What are the types of scholarships available in SAU?

A large number of scholarships and freeships are available to students. There are three major heads under which scholarships/freeships are provided in SAU –
a) President’s Scholarships (For MA/MSc and LLM students only): Two scholarships are offered for each academic programme: one to the student scoring the highest marks in the Entrance Test in the Indian list and the other to the student scoring the highest marks in the non-Indian list (South Asian countries other than India) who finally joins the University. The scholarship will comprise: Tuition fee waiver + Hostel fee waiver (if applicable) + INR 7,000 per month as living allowance. Awardees will also receive an amount of INR 10,000 (in respect of non-Indian Students) and Rupees 5,000 (in respect of Indian students) as a “Start-up Allowance” at the beginning of their tenure so as to help meet part of their inbound travel cost and book purchases etc, and as a “Pack-up Allowance” at the end to cover their outbound travel and excess baggage cost respectively.

b) SAARC India Silver Jubilee Scholarships for Master’s and PhD Programmes: SAARC-India Silver Jubilee Scholarships (SJS), instituted by the Government of India, are offered for Master’s and Doctoral level studies to meritorious students coming from the Least Developed Countries of the region i.e., Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Maldives and Nepal. This Scholarship includes full Tuition Fee waiver + Hostel Fee waiver + living allowance of INR 7,000 per month (Master’s level programmes) or INR 25,000 per month (PhD programmes). Awardees will also receive an amount of Rupees 10,000 as a “Start-up Allowance” at the beginning of their tenure so as to help meet part of their inbound travel cost and book purchases etc, and as a “Pack-up Allowance” at the end to cover their outbound travel and extra baggage cost respectively.

c) SAU Merit Scholarships (For MA/MSc and LLM students only): Ten scholarships are available in each academic programme: five to the next highest scoring students in the Indian list and five to the next highest scoring students in the non-Indian (South Asian countries other than India) list in the Entrance Test, after the award of the SJS and Presidents Scholarships, who finally join the University. The scholarship will comprise: Tuition fee waiver + Hostel fee waiver (if applicable) + INR 5,000 per month as living allowance.

d) SAU Freeships (For MA/MSc and LLM students only): As per SAU mandate, no student will be denied admission to the University because s/he cannot pay the fees. Therefore SAU will provide free education to such students by waiving the tuition and hostel fee (if applicable). No additional support for living expenses will be provided. The Scholarship Award Committee will accept applications from such students up to 22 August 2016, which must be supported by the following documents:

□ Authenticated Original Annual income certificate of parents issued by Government authorities or by a Revenue Officer (in case of parents being in business) in English language or accompanied by an authenticated English translation.
□ A recent, original salary slip/salary statement of Father/Mother in English or an authenticated English translation (in case of parents being in government/private service).
□ Income tax returns of Father/Mother in case income comes under tax bracket.

e) SAU Tuition Fee Waiver for PhD Students: All PhD students will receive tuition fee waiver.
f) Financial Support from SAU for PhD Programmes: Financial support for PhD students of INR 25,000 per month is awarded to students not receiving any kind of scholarship/sponsorship or JRF support from agencies like UGC/CSIR/DBT/ICMR etc. or similar agencies in other SAARC countries.

Duration of Scholarships/Freeships: In all cases, scholarships and freeships are granted for one year. They are extended each year subject to satisfactory academic performance, maintenance of hostel/university discipline and good conduct, reviewed at the end of each year. All recipients of scholarships and freeships must therefore be regular in attending classes and make full efforts to sustain and improve their academic performance. The maximum duration of the SAU PhD scholarship is 5 years.

First year scholarships will cover the summer vacation period at the end of the first two semesters. Scholarships for June and July to continuing students will be disbursed at the end of July, after they re-join the University. In the second year of all Master’s level programmes, scholarships and freeships will cease at the end of the academic session i.e. end of May 2018 and will not cover the summer vacation period at the end of the second year.

PhD fellowships from external agencies: PhD students who have qualified for JRF support from agencies like the Indian UGC/CSIR/DBT and ICMR, may avail the fellowship as per the terms and conditions of the granting agencies. However, if they receive fees and hostel allowances, these will be recovered from them to the extent of their allowance.

Q14. How do I apply for scholarships?

All scholarships are merit-based, depending on your rank in the entrance test. However, a limited number of freeships are available to students who cannot afford to pay the fees. Such students can apply on the prescribed application form after joining the University along with all supporting documents.

Q15. Can I get campus jobs at SAU?

A limited number of campus jobs are available under the Work – Earn programme. You can apply for these jobs on a monthly basis after joining the university.

Q16. Do non-Indian students face any disparity?

All students, whether from within India or outside, are treated as equals in all matters, whether academic or administrative. In order to promote integration amongst students living in the hostel, the university has a policy of letting students from different countries share accommodation.

Q17. What prospects do SAU graduates have after they pass out?

SAU degrees are recognized by all SAARC member countries. Job opportunities depend, among other things, on the grades students get and other attributes you pick up while at the University. Many SAU alumni are well placed in universities, colleges, research organisations, think tanks, etc. across the region while some are pursuing higher studies around the world.

Q18. What all do I need to bring when I come to SAU after admission?

The university provides a bed along with a mattress and a table and a chair in the hostel room. Students have to bring their own bedlinen and blanket/quilt. The Delhi winter can be quite cold.

Q19. Does SAU offer an MBA programme?

No. Currently SAU doesn’t offer an MBA programmes.

Q20. Does SAU offer online / distance learning programmes?

No. All Master’s and Research programmes are regular programmes and do not allow students to take up full time or even part-time jobs.

    I would like to know that if somebody unable to clear the entrance test of MPhil/PhD this year, will he/she be able to apply in 2017? Is there any rule “how many times a candidate can apply before successful in getting admission? I shall look forward to reply from any representative of South Asian University.

      Hi Kashif, I do not think there would be threshold/cap on the number of attempts for the entrance. Also I do not suppose one would wait purposefully for more than five years to qualify the entrance exam.

      Hope this helps.

    Dear Sir/Madam,

    Greetings of the day!

    On the eve of the SAU entrance exam for admissions 2016, I first shall deliver my hearty & very best wishes for tomorrow’s exam.

    I have a few queries to the SAU.
    I wish to know:
    1) if there are any preferred subjects areas from which students are to be admitted to MA International Relations;
    2) if there are further assessments besides the entrance exam;
    3) (by) when will the outcome of the entrance exam be informed;
    4) if all examinees be informed of their outcome of the entrance exam;
    5) the cut-off score (if any) for MA International Relations;
    6) the class strength admitted per annum for MA International Relations;
    7) if the degree(s) conferred by SAU are recognized well beyond SAARC nations also, for eg.: in the USA, Canada, UK, Australia, NZ, EU nations, etc.,

    The archived chats worry and scare me a bit. I hope I get in as I have waited 3 long years to get in SAU.

    Looking forward to your soonest response.

    Thanks & Regards,
    Hari
