Q1. Where is SAU located?

The South Asian University is located in New Delhi. Currently the university functions from its Akbar Bhawan Campus in Chanakyapuri, New Delhi. A permanent campus of about 100 acres in Maidan Garhi in South Delhi has been allotted by the Government of India where construction is in full swing and we hope to be able to shift there soon.

 Q2. Are there any regional campuses of SAU?

No, though we hope to have some in the future.

Q3. What major programmes does SAU offer?

Currently SAU offers Masters & PhD programmes in Applied Mathematics, Biotechnology, Computer Science, Economics, International Relations, Legal Studies and Sociology.

Q4. Are the degrees provided by the South Asian University recognised?

Yes. The degrees provided by the South Asian University are recognised in all the member nations of SAARC.

Q5. What is the eligibility criteria required for admission?

For admission to Master’s & PhD programmes in Economics, Sociology, International Relations and Legal Studies, the minimum prescribed eligibility criteria is 50% marks or an equivalent grade in the qualifying degree.

For admission to Master’s & PhD programmes in Applied Mathematics, Biotechnology and Computer Science, the minimum prescribed eligibility percentage is 55% marks or an equivalent grade in the qualifying degree.

 

Q6. How are the students inducted?

Candidates seeking admission to the Master’s programmes have to take a written test. The syllabus and pattern for the test for most of the programmes can be accessed from the university website.
Admission to PhD programmes is in two phases, phase I is an online computer based entrance test and phase II comprises submission of a research proposal and state of purpose followed by an interview. The entrance test is based on a prescribed syllabus and pattern, uploaded on the university website. The interview for candidates from outside India can be held through Skype. The requirements for the interview are also uploaded on the university website for each programme of study.

Q7. Are hostel facilities available for all students?

Separate hostels for boys and girls who come from outside the National Capital Region (of Delhi) are available on a sharing basis (3-to-a room). Accommodation is not available for family members, spouses and children of married students.

Q8. How do I apply?

You need to log in to the university website and then register and apply online. It is better if you can make payment for the entrance test fee of USD 10 or INR 700 or equivalent through internet banking or debit or credit card. Those who cannot make payment online are still required to apply online and then opt for off-line payment.

Q9. When should I apply?

The admission process has already started. The last date for applying for admissions this year is 20 March 2019 and the entrance test will be held on 27 and 28 April 2019 at specified centres in all SAARC countries.

Q10. I don’t belong to any of the SAARC countries but I want to apply. Do you have centres in countries outside the SAARC region?

If you don’t belong to any of the SAARC countries, you do not need to take the Entrance Test. You should fill the prescribed application form (Application Form for the Nationals of Non-SAARC Countries) and mail it directly to the Deputy Registrar Admissions, South Asian University, Akbar Bhawan, Chanakyapuri, New Delhi- 110021, India with all supporting documents including degrees and mark-sheets, identity proof and a coloured photograph. The application should reach South Asian University by 29 March 2019. Each application will be scrutinized by the concerned faculty to determine the eligibility of the candidate and the decision of the university will be final in this regard.

Q11. What is the teacher student ratio at SAU?

The current teacher student ratio at SAU is approximately 1:6.

Q12. Do you have any undergraduate programme?

The university doesn’t have any undergraduate programme as yet.

Q13. What are the types of scholarships available in SAU?

SAU has generous Scholarship and Financial Support options. However, the rules are under revision at present. Guidelines will be uploaded as soon as they are finalised.

Q14. How do I apply for scholarships?

All scholarships are merit-based, depending on your rank in the entrance test. However, a limited number of freeships are available to students who cannot afford to pay the fees. Such students can apply on the prescribed application form after joining the University along with all supporting documents.

Q15. Can I get campus jobs at SAU?

A limited number of campus jobs are available under the Work – Earn programme. You can apply for these jobs on a monthly basis after joining the university.

Q16. Do non-Indian students face any disparity?

All students, whether from within India or outside, are treated as equals in all matters, whether academic or administrative. In order to promote integration amongst students living in the hostel, the university has a policy of letting students from different countries share accommodation.

Q17. What prospects do SAU graduates have after they pass out?

SAU degrees are recognized by all SAARC member countries. Job opportunities depend, among other things, on the grades students get and other attributes you pick up while at the University. Many SAU alumni are well placed in universities, colleges, research organisations, think tanks, etc. across the region while many are pursuing higher studies around the world.

Q18. What all do I need to bring when I come to SAU after admission?

The university provides a bed along with a mattress, a table and a chair in the hostel room. Students have to bring their own bed linen and blanket/quilt. The Delhi winter can be quite cold.

Q19. Does SAU offer an MBA programme?

No. Currently SAU doesn’t offer an MBA programme.

Q20. Does SAU offer online / distance learning programmes?

No.
